Still Having the Remodel or Move Conversation?

Has this conversation been going on in your house for a year… maybe even two?

“Should we remodel?”
“Or is it finally time to move?”

If so, you’re not alone.

Marcy and I have both wrestled with that same question ourselves, so we understand how difficult it can be.

Years ago, Marcy spent more than a year debating whether to move to a larger home or add on to the one she loved. After a lot of thought, she chose to remodel and has never looked back.

My story took a different path. My husband and I remodeled our home, but it still didn’t feel like where we wanted to put down roots. We eventually moved to a home that needed even more work, but it offered the neighborhood and location we had always wanted. Nearly twenty years later, we’re still grateful we made that decision.

These are the same conversations we have with clients every week.

What we’ve learned is that the biggest decision usually isn’t whether to remodel or move. It’s deciding to make a plan.

Without one, it’s easy to fall into decision fatigue. Five years have passed, the kitchen still hasn’t been remodeled, and Zillow is still sending listings that leave you wondering, “What if?”

If this sounds familiar, here are four places to start:

Picture Your Life Five Years From Now

What do you want your home to do for you that it doesn’t today?

Ask Whether Your Current Home Can Realistically Get You There

Sometimes it can. Sometimes it can’t.

Compare Both Options on Paper

What would it cost to remodel? What could your current home sell for? What would your next home realistically cost? We often help clients work through this exercise, and seeing the numbers side by side can bring surprising clarity.

Give Yourself a Timeline

Whether it’s six months or two years, having a target date keeps the decision from lingering indefinitely.

Sometimes the answer is to stay and invest in the home you already love. Other times, the better investment is a different neighborhood, a different layout, or simply a home that better fits this stage of your life

“Sometimes the most valuable conversation isn’t about buying or selling a home. It’s helping someone create a plan so they aren’t asking themselves the same question five years from now.” — Kim & Marcy
